How Wind & Hail Deductibles Work in Texas
Deductibles
If you’re like most homeowners, you probably know your deductible, or at least have a general idea of it. Maybe it’s $1,000. Maybe $2,500.
But what many homeowners don’t realize is that wind and hail deductibles often work very differently than their standard deductible. And unfortunately, most people don’t discover that until after a major storm rolls through.
What's the Difference
On a typical homeowners insurance policy, your standard deductible is a flat dollar amount. For example:
- $1,000 deductible = You pay $1,000 before insurance pays the rest (up to your coverage limit).
Simple and predictable.
However, in states like Texas, where wind and hail claims are common, many policies have a separate wind/hail deductible that is based on a percentage, not a flat dollar amount.
How a Percentage Deductible Works
Instead of paying a fixed amount, your wind/hail deductible is often calculated as a percentage of your dwelling coverage (Coverage A).
For example:
- Home insured for $300,000
- 2% wind/hail deductible
- Your out-of-pocket cost = $6,000
That’s a big difference compared to a $1,000 standard deductible.
Some policies may have 1%, 2%, or even 3–5% wind/hail deductibles. The higher the percentage, the lower your premium usually is, but the higher your cost if you have a claim.
Why This Matters After a Storm
After a hailstorm or wind event, homeowners often assume their deductible will be the same as it is for other claims, like water damage or theft.
Then the estimate comes back… and the deductible is several thousand dollars.
That’s when coverage details suddenly become very important.
Understanding your deductible before storm season can help you:
- Avoid financial surprises
- Decide if a lower percentage makes sense
- Budget properly for potential out-of-pocket costs
- Review whether your current coverage fits your risk tolerance
Don't Wait Until the Next Storm
In storm-prone areas, especially across Texas, wind and hail claims are some of the most common homeowners insurance claims filed each year.
The best time to review your policy isn’t after shingles are missing from your roof. It’s now, when you can calmly look at your coverage and make adjustments if needed.
Take a few minutes to check:
- What is your dwelling coverage amount?
- What percentage is your wind/hail deductible?
- How much would that actually cost you out of pocket?
If you’re not sure how to find that information, ask your agent to walk you through it. A quick review today can prevent a stressful surprise tomorrow.
